Renewal Reminder
Volunteer Membership Coordinator Bob Jackson works with a lot of numbers, and he recently came up with a really good one – 39.  No, it’s not his age, but the percent of projected annual membership dollars we’ve already collected in 2010!  This is a first for the Society, and we’d like to keep setting membership records.  For those of you whose memberships are due to expire this month, please renew now – Go here: JOIN GV Society » . And while you’re there, consider raising your membership to a higher level.  After all, the donation is tax-deductible, and it supports a very worthy cause – your neighborhood.  Questions about GVS membership may be directed to Bob at volunteer@germanvillage.com, or to Membership Committee Chair Jeanne Likins at jlikins@columbus.rr.com.  Thanks, Bob!  And thanks to YOU for supporting the German Village Society.

Membership Meeting
The next meeting of the GVS Membership Committee will be Tuesday, February 9th, from 6 p.m. to 7:30, at the Visitors’ Center.  Membership dues are more important than ever, as the Society seeks to re-shape its business model.  Help us remain self-sustaining by helping us build our membership!  If you’re interested in serving, please attend this meeting.

Gala Draws Near
The German Village Society marked its 50th anniversary on Sunday, January 10th.  But the celebration continues!  Please join us for “A Taste of the Good Life” – Saturday evening, February 27th, at the Grange Insurance Building on South High.  Invitations have been sent to current Society members.  If you didn’t receive yours – or if you’re not a member and would like to attend – please call the Meeting Haus at 614-221-8888.  But be advised:  Space is limited, and the tickets are going fast! The event includes an entertaining evening with food from our neighborhood’s top restaurants, wine and mixed drinks, musical entertainment, host Andrea Cambern and many surprises, too!  This promises to be a casual, fun evening for all.  And for those who have asked, this is NOT a fundraising event.  The only person who’ll even think about asking you for money is the bartender.  So please bring a few small bills, if you plan to have extra drinks!

Birds at Berliner

Lifelong Villager Pat Phillips keeps us apprised of area nature sightings.  This week, he reports close encounters with a bald eagle, an immature bald eagle, a red-tailed hawk and several downy woodpeckers – all along the Berliner-Scioto Bike Trail.  Thanks, Pat!

“Green” Salt
As member Chris Hune recently pointed out, you can avoid damage to sidewalks this winter by using the newer, non-corrosive ice and snow melting compounds.  The Go Green Committee wholeheartedly supports this idea, and suggests you look for products that say, “Safe for Children and Pets,” “Environmentally Friendly” or “Won’t harm trees and plants.”  Sue Meigs, at DogWorksCats2, sells a “green” melting agent called “Ground Works.”  Please use these environmentally friendly products on your sidewalks.  They’ll protect not only the bricks and concrete, but also trees and plants.  Check out germanvillage.com for other “Go Green” tips.

Way to Go, Norm!

As you may know, cancer survivor Norm Hall has been raising money to kick cancer, once and for all.  His original fundraising goal for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society was an impressive $10,000.  But now that he has raised more than $16,000, he’s raised his sights.  You can help Norm achieve his new goal of $20,000 by donating at GoNormGo.com.  Norm plans to celebrate 10 years of being cancer-free by participating in the upcoming Paris Marathon.

N4N Success Story!
Last week, Neighbors 4 Neighbors featured a long-distance request from Susan and Bill Salt.  The former German Village couple were seeking a house to rent, so they might spend the summer among old friends and neighbors.  We are happy to report that Susan and Bill have already found a home, and will take up temporary residence on East Beck Street.  We are thrilled to have them back – if only for a few months.  Susan and Bill were wonderful neighbors, and generous Society members – opening their South Fifth Street home to thousands of visitors to the 2006 Haus und Garten Tour.  Thanks to readers like you, it promises to be a great season for the Salts (pun intended)!
