A note from Society Board President Darci Congrove:
While we formulate a plan to fill the duties of the Office Manager position and Russ Arledge takes some time off to deal with health issues, we are staffing the GVS office with volunteers from the community and the board. Many thanks to Bob Jackson and the crew of loyal, hard-working Visitors’ Center volunteers who make this possible! To accommodate a reasonable schedule for our volunteers as we get through the next few weeks, the Meeting Haus will be open from 9am through 4pm Monday through Friday. The Visitors’ Center will be open during those same hours, and will also be open on Saturday from 10am through 2pm, as usual. Should you have questions or need help with a specific issue, please direct them to Darci Congrove, GVS Board President, at board@germanvillage.com or leave a message for Darci on the Meeting Haus voice mail system 221-8888, extension 15. Thank you, in advance, for your patience and support of our wonderful volunteers.

50th Anniversary Committee
Visions of the Village
The premier of the Visions of the Village show is this Sunday, March 21, from 3-5pm in the Brent Warner Fest Hall at the Meeting Haus. Some of the top collectors and artists in the Village are loaning us some of their best art pieces that depict local scenes and events over the years. Watercolors, oil paintings, photography, and sculpture will all be featured. Many of these pieces have never been seen outside the home of the collector. The premier is open to the public and admission is free. The exhibit will be open through the next week (M-F, 12-4pm) and Saturday, March 27 (10am-2pm) and close on Sunday, March 28 (2-5pm). This event is one of many events that the 50th Anniversary Committee has planned for this year to celebrate our Golden Anniversary so please make a point not to miss it!
Civic Relations Committee
Police Lunch Reminder
Society Board member Jerry Glick reminds us that the monthly 11th Precinct Police Lunch will be Thursday March 25 at 12:30 in the Scheurer Room of the German Village Meeting Haus. The latest safety information and police suggestions will be discussed and you will have an opportunity to ask questions about your neighborhood safety. Let’s have a great turnout to show our appreciation for their dedicated service. You may bring a sack lunch if you so desire.
Historic Preservation Committee
A reminder that the committee will meet, as usual, on the last Thursday of the month at 6pm in the Meeting Haus Scheurer Room. Chair Cheryl Hacker notes that the March 25 meeting is open to anyone interested!
Membership Committee
The Membership Committee is doing a quarterly drawing for a great prize when they bring in a new, paid GVS member. The idea is “each one, reach one.” We have two prizes at this time: a free cat or dog exam from German Village Veterinary Hospital and, some great homemade cookies made by President Darci Congrove. The contest closes for the first quarter the last day of March! While we have 42 new members, we are looking for more folks who want to “get connected, stay connected”!
~ and ~
Chair Jeanne Likins notes that the committee has been hard at work developing plans to thank all levels of German Village Society membership. The second of the 2010 Membership Appreciation events (there will be four more!) is scheduled for March 21 for members at the $125 supporter level or greater.
A note was recently mailed to supporters, but the invitation is extended here as well: In recognition of your support, we would like to invite you to a special preview reception of the Visions of the Village exhibit in the Brent Warner Fest Hall at the Meeting Haus on Sunday, March 21, from 2-3pm. The exhibit has been planned as part of our ongoing celebration of the GVS 50th Anniversary, and it promises to be wonderful. Light refreshments will be served on Sunday afternoon, and the exhibit will be open until 5pm.
Streetscape Committee
“Have a good tree photo?”
The Streetscape Committee is asking for your help! We are currently developing an educational brochure focusing on all aspects of replacing the trees found on your sidewalk. While the brochure is almost complete we are in search of a picture to put on the front cover of it. Do you have one that might help us out? If it meets the following criteria, please send it to briansantin@gmail.com. Many thanks in advance for your help!
Street Tree Brochure Cover Picture criteria:
1. Quintessential mid-summer view down a shaded German Village brick sidewalk with residences on one side and a repetition of street trees on the other side.
2. Vertical/portrait format preferred
3. Jpeg image
Pantry Items Needed
Pastor Jim Donnan writes the following:
Please be so kind as to inform the GV community of the Food Pantry’s need for 4 cases of canned spaghetti sauce and 5 cases of canned tuna; the Mid Ohio Food Bank did not have those items for purchase this week. The spaghetti and tuna may be dropped off at the GV Meeting Haus or Livingston Church and will be distributed next week to clients.

The pastoral staffs of three local United Methodist churches have decided upon a unique way of sharing their church services during Holy Week. Each of the three churches will host one service, with a twist. The pastors will take turns preaching at a church that is not their home church. Each service will begin at 7:00 P.M., is expected to last about one hour, and will be a part of a predesigned trilogy.
On April 1st, Maundy Thursday will be observed at Thurman Ave. UMC, 415 Thurman Ave., Columbus, 43206. The service will be led by Pastor Pamela Brater of Gates-Fourth UMC.
On April 2nd, Good Friday will be observed at Washington Ave. UMC, 359 E. Markison Ave., Columbus, 43207. The service will be led by Pastor Jay Moyers of Thurman Ave. UMC.
On April 3rd, Holy Saturday will be observed at Gates-Fourth UMC, 119 E. Gates St., Columbus, 43206. The service will be led by Pastor Jeremy Scott of Washington Ave. UMC.
Each church will observe Easter Sunday individually:
· Washington Ave. UMC – Sunrise service at 7:10 A.M. on the hill at Schiller Park, breakfast at the church at 8:30 A.M., worship service at the church at 10:00 A.M.
· Gates-Fourth UMC – worship service at 10:30 A.M.

Local History Support
Rep. Kathleen Chandler gave sponsor testimony Wednesday to the Senate Ways and Means and Economic Development Committee in support of House Bill 75, the legislation that would create a new income tax check-off for the Ohio Historical Society. The Society, in turn, has testified that it would dedicate the revenue from the tax check-off to establish a new competitive matching grants program for state and local history-related organizations.
House Bill 75 passed the House easily with a 95-1 bipartisan show of support. Now we need your support to get the legislation through the Senate. Please follow the link below to contact your state senator and urge their support for HB 75 to help promote and protect Ohio’s history efforts all across the state. For more information about the bill and how to contact your senators, visit online at http://www.ohiohistory.org/portal/advocacy-p.html.
Thank you for your continued support for history and preservation in Ohio!
Sincerely,
Todd Kleismit
