Workshops Set

The German Village Society is pleased to partner with European Papers for a series of workshops in the Village through the rest of 2012!

European Papers is a nationally-recognized paper arts studio. Owner Lisa Ohmer, a longtime Village resident, has crafted a diverse schedule of fun and interesting offerings in jewelry, bookbinding, altered arts, calligraphy, collage and mixed media. Classes from Lisa and other guest instructors range from 2.5 to 5 hours in length and will be held each month on a Saturday and a selected Wednesday evening. European Papers will also offer a Trunk Show on each month’s Saturday class day with a fun selection of art materials, artistic gifts and curiosities. The Trunk Show is free and open to all- so stop by to browse and see all the goings on.

Workshop highlights include beeswax collage, paste paper, wire sculpture, soldering and expressive lettering. The series kicks off Wednesday, May 23 with “Wearable Steampunk” a cool jewelry assemblage workshop with gears, wings, test tubes and pocket watch parts. These hands-on classes include most supplies and cost varies, but German Village Society members receive a $5 discount. This fall, their unusual exhibition of Artist Trading Cards- often known as ATCs- small works of art based on the size of sports trading cards, comes to the Meeting Haus. More than 700 of these miniature works, created from artists from all over the world- in almost every art medium imaginable, will be on display. The pieces are culled from their 7,500 piece gallery show- House of Cards- the largest of it’s kind in the world. Workshops and trading sessions are planned, so you can socialize with your neighbors and learn about this fascinating art form. What fun!

We’re looking forward to working with Lisa to raise awareness of the Village’s artistic community outside our great neighborhood as well as offer “steps away” creative opportunities for residents.

Deal Me In! ATCs Revealed

Explore the fascinating world of Artist Trading Cards! An artistic variation of baseball and other trading cards, these small works of art have become the new calling card for artists. You’ll create several ATCs, exploring different techniques and media & learn about limited editions. Includes ATC Wizard Tool, supplies & a guided tour of House of Cards show. Bring BTK

Well-Loved Book: Book Repair 101 -New

Learn the basics of book repair in this hands-on clinic. From diagnosis to treatment, you’ll explore re-attaching covers, tightening hinges, correcting spines and torn & loose pages. Workshop includes demonstrations, discussion and interactives followed by guided studio work time, stay for all or part, as wish. Supplies provided, but bring a few older books (not valuable or important to you) to practice playing doctor.

Design Your Own Monogram

Explore monograms, their evolution and many various styles, while designing your own personal mark! You’ll learn tips for designing, explore working with typographic forms and take part in fun interactive exercises. Explore the use of hand lettering, computer typestyles and illustrated letter forms. Your design will be made into your very own art stamp! Receive a guide to monograms, custom rubber stamp & electronic file of your art.

Postcard in Glass

Learn the art of collage to create two pieces of postcard-sized art. Using an array of materials (vintage ephemera, pressed botanicals, fine papers, imagery, fibers) create a 2-sided collage, encased in glass & copper. Materials provided for two pieces, complete with easels. Includes discussion of the history and development of collage as a fine art technique. Bring BTK & images of special interest

Soldering 101: Projects & Techniques

Introduction to the tools, materials and techniques for soldering. You’ll create 5 jewelry pieces, each with a different technique. Work with fine glass art stones, dominoes, a tiny bottle and microscope slides. Learn glass cutting to create matching earrings. Includes a soldering iron- yours to keep after the class. Bonsai Tree Sculpture -with Nancy Fiumera  

Bonsai, the Japanese art of growing miniature trees, is re-interpreted as you learn techniques to sculpt these trees with wire. Strands of fine wire will be twisted and manipulated to form the delicate branches, trunk & roots of your tree. Bring jewelry tools, glasses & BTK

Miniature Soldered Book -New

Create a miniature book out of copper or brass, featuring a color transfer on the cover. Various metal hardwire will be used to add interest, along with glass beads and a pewter cast charm; an added ball chain creates a wearable work of art. Ribbon Bound

In this fun workshop make four different book forms exquisitely bound with ribbon. Learn the form and function of these small books, popular from the 16th-19th centuries, and currently enjoying a new popularity in self-publishing. Dyed, Tied & Beaded Book

Botanical Quilting

Create a beautiful miniature “quilt” using real flowers and collage. Explore creating harmonious color schemes and using quilt patterns as a design tool. You will work with vintage text, maps and images, finely pressed botanicals and decorative papers from all over the world. This December offering includes the option to use Italian holiday papers, if desired. Complete with 8” wood frame, learning framing techniques to finish the back. Bring BTK

Treasures & Jewels

Explore jewelry making as you create a two pairs of earrings and a beautiful pin! Learn basic jewelry design and a variety of techniques working with semi-precious stones (garnet, peridot, labradorite, freshwater and faceted pearls), Austrian crystal and glass beads, sterling silver, Lumiere paints and shrink art.
