50th Anniversary Celebration

On January 10th, 1960, a group of curious folks gathered at Schiller Park Recreation Center to hear Frank Fetch call for the formation of a civic association. His goal: To save the south side neighborhood from demolition. Fetch must have been very convincing, because 183 citizens became charter members of the German Village Society.

We don’t know that anyone anticipated all that our German Village Society could and would become. Thanks to the earnest leadership of our founder Frank Fetch, an earlier generation of Society members and trustees gave us a solid foundation upon which to build. The result: A civic association dedicated to retaining the character and distinction of the past, while creating a thriving contemporary community in Columbus’ South End.

There aren’t many civic associations that can boast as many accomplishments as ours, or can cherish the fact that they have been doing it for five decades. The Society stands out as a remarkable example of what a group of neighbors can do when they are determined to make the very best of their surroundings. So, throughout 2010, we will celebrate fifty years of working on behalf of residents, of promoting the restoration of our historic architecture, and of fostering a sense of community like no other in Columbus. Included below are just a few of the events we’ve planned. So mark your calendars and come help us celebrate!
