We are back !!! There are some changes, however, other than our feature’s name. We will still be presenting the residential histories of German Village homes and shops but this will be monthly rather than weekly. To compensate for this, the feature will now be four pages covering four locations (be sure to click on the picture to advance to the next history). In addition, we have added a ”News of the Day” segment which will feature stories from Columbus Newspapers published in the nineteenth century. We hope you enjoy them.

Before we get started, we have on display at Winan’s Chocolates and Coffees our “ German Village Remembrances” exhibit. Featured are seventy or so current German Village Homes with descriptions of residents from 100 or more years ago. Stop by, get some coffee and enjoy the show.

This week’s locales feature the homes of a chainmaker, a chairmaker, a shoecutter, and a cigarmaker. We also tell of a circus act, a boy who runs away to the circus, fireworks, and a ladybug. Go to www.thismonthsgvlocales.com

The German Village Society is pleased to partner with European Papers for a series of workshops in the Village through the rest of 2012!

European Papers is a nationally-recognized paper arts studio. Owner Lisa Ohmer, a longtime Village resident, has crafted a diverse schedule of fun and interesting offerings in jewelry, bookbinding, altered arts, calligraphy, collage and mixed media. Classes from Lisa and other guest instructors range from 2.5 to 5 hours in length and will be held each month on a Saturday and a selected Wednesday evening. European Papers will also offer a Trunk Show on each month’s Saturday class day with a fun selection of art materials, artistic gifts and curiosities. The Trunk Show is free and open to all- so stop by to browse and see all the goings on.

Workshop highlights include beeswax collage, paste paper, wire sculpture, soldering and expressive lettering. The series kicks off Wednesday, May 23 with “Wearable Steampunk” a cool jewelry assemblage workshop with gears, wings, test tubes and pocket watch parts. These hands-on classes include most supplies and cost varies, but German Village Society members receive a $5 discount. or more information and project pictures you can visit their website at europeanpapers.com.

This fall, their unusual exhibition of Artist Trading Cards- often known as ATCs- small works of art based on the size of sports trading cards, comes to the Meeting Haus. More than 700 of these miniature works, created from artists from all over the world- in almost every art medium imaginable, will be on display. The pieces are culled from their 7,500 piece gallery show- House of Cards- the largest of it’s kind in the world. Workshops and trading sessions are planned, so you can socialize with your neighbors and learn about this fascinating art form. What fun!

We’re looking forward to working with Lisa to raise awareness of the Village’s artistic community outside our great neighborhood as well as offer “steps away” creative opportunities for residents.

Likely Schedule:

• Wednesday, May 23
• Saturday, June 9
• Wednesday, June 27
• Saturday, July 7 (tentatively Thomas Hoyer, a calligrapher from Germany)
• Wednesday, July 25
• Saturday August 4
• Wednesday, August 22
• Saturday, September 8
• Wednesday, September 19
• Saturday, October 27
• Wednesday, November 14
• Saturday, November 17
• Saturday, December 8

OSU graduate student Nick Gurich is about to undertake a third quarterly project to benefit the German Village Society. Nick has been working with the Long-Range Planning Committee, and his next project is research into a separately branded circulator bus route. The idea is to find an option that COTA and other downtown neighborhood leaders could embrace that would help bring downtown workers to German Village for lunch and happy hour, as well as bring tourists from downtown hotels.

Nick and his colleagues have already created two reports for Long-Range Planning regarding the neighborhood’s optimal business and residential mix. Their final reports are chock full of really interesting data about our Village that you might enjoy perusing below.

PreTour chair Anne Gallutia says PreTour details for the 2012 event are shaping up beautifully. This year’s theme is “Characters welcome” and Anne reports that there are 17 dinner parties taking shape around that theme. Some include: famous paintings, Shakespearean works/characters, Village characters past, Shady characters, Mad Men and Hemingway, just to name a few. There is at least one progressive dinner offering where the guests will move from house to house through the course of the meal!

With the creativity of the Village, expect costumes and decorations to put guests in the mood!

This year’s cocktail party on Willow Street is sponsored by KA Menendian, who is planning to create a special drink for the event. The silent auction is back! What was previously known as the “tent party” is now Party on the Platz! The Party on the Platz will feature food catered by Barcelona and desserts by Pistacia Vera. The Bob Boyd Fiat Lounge will also be part of POP.

Seriously, how will you decide which you want to attend? Better figure it out – tickets go on sale May 19.
