The German Village Community Farm was established in the Spring of 2009 as a sub-group of the Go Grün / Go Green Committee It is a functional community garden run by volunteers from both the German Village Society and the Livingston United Methodist Church.

The Farm helps support the Food Pantry by donating a portion of all crops during the harvesting months.

April 2011 -

The German Village Community Farm gets a jump start on the season!  A portion of this season’s vegetables will be donated to the food pantry and charitable pharmacy at Livingston United Methodist Church, where the garden is located.

This weekend the German Village Farm began its third season by expanding yet again!  An energetic group of almost 20 Farmers got together on Saturday morning to build new plots and fill ‘em with dirt.

August 2010 –

Squash vine borders have been identified as causing some major issues with a few of our squash plants!  Have no fear – thankfully Farmer Jim Kaminskas has come to the rescue with the following recipe for success –

I’d do a 1-2 punch. Put the green bag Bug-Slug out and broadcast it, and then either or both of the blue bottle Insect Control or red bottle 3 n 1 Disease Control. The sprays are contact kill. They are not 100% natural and organic, but they are certainly less toxic alternatives.

I am leaving the following products at the cooler at the church door for all to use:
5 bags Bug & Slug Control
3 bottles Insect Control
3 bottles 3 n 1 Disease Control

July 2010 –

Many thanks to Larry Drake for donating a new composting bin to the Community Farm!  All Farmers are encouraged to contribute to this great addition.  It is ready for use, but, as we learned from Lou Ann, we need to follow a few basic rules. The main thing is to not put in weeds, which  we should continue to put on the old compost pile.  Other than that we should try to have a balance between “brown” ingredients (Straw, coffee grounds, twigs, dry leaves, etc.) and “green” ingredients (plant trimmings, grass clippings, kitchen waste, etc.).  I think most of us will be bringing green ingredients during the summer, so it would be a good idea to get a bale of straw so people can mix it in with the green stuff.  Straw also helps keep the pile aerated, another condition necessary for success. Here’s a link to a web site that explains it in more detail.

June 2010 –

We are continuing to donate fresh vegetables from our Farm to the Charitable Pharmacy at the Church.  When donating vegetables to the Pharmacy:

**The cooler will be emptied at 9 a.m. and 12:00 noon on  Mon. & Wed., and 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Fri.   This way, you can pick your vegetables either the evening before, or that morning, and place them in the cooler, as they will be fresher the day they are given to the clients at the Pharmacy.  And please remember to complete the form in the cooler with your name and what you are donating.**

May 2010 –
The GV Farm had an exciting opportunity to learn from Luann Jackson on composting methods that will be implementing at the Farm.  For more information on recent updates CLICK HERE »
