Where can you visit with current German Village friends, provide information to folks outside the neighborhood and help the office staff?
The German Village Meeting Haus Visitors’ Center!

For less than four hours a week, you can greet guests and provide information about our neighborhood. You can also help out the staff with small office projects. There is no need to know the entire history of German Village. We have a great video, maps and other information to help visitors navigate the Village.

At this time, we are in need of volunteers for Monday mornings from 9am-12:30pm and Saturday 10am-2pm. If you can volunteer only two hours on Saturday, that may work. We are also looking to build our ’swing’ shift list. If you are unable to commit to weekly schedule, you can fill in for volunteers who are unable to make their shift. We are flexible. There will be a short orientation and then you are good to go. It’s fun and easy!

Security Notes

Over the last few days we have received several security alerts from in and around the Village…be sure to keep alert when out and about and call the Columbus Police Department at 645.4545 if you see anything suspicious.

~ “Someone entered my house on Sunday, July 11 between 5:30 and 10:30pm and took a painting. The house in the Beck and Fifth Street area had been left unlocked as the owner visited her neighbors. It appears the only thing taken was the painting which was of three women by artist Sandra Aska.”

~ “Someone broke in my garage last night. Didn’t steal anything, primarily nothing of value that is not chained. Came through the front and broke open the back gate. Dog barked his brains out so I got up around 2:30am.”

~”Sunday afternoon our backyard gate, that faces the alley, was broken through and our backyard was accessed. We know that this happened between the hours of 1-4pm, because our neighbors noticed the gate broken around 4pm (we didn’t get home till around 7pm, but we did notice the gate broken right away and then saw neighbors). Called the police, filed a report, fixed and reinforced the gate. Nothing was stolen from the yard and all other doors and windows to garage and house were not tampered with. The perpetrator either got scared off or decided to cut his losses – who knows.

On another note, while speaking with our neighbors who noticed the gate, a second neighbor gave a description of a man who was creeping around a neighboring backyard at 3am on Sunday morning (7/25) – making a lot of noise. The police took the report for this incident as well. The description of the man creeping through the backyard was as follows: White male, 6′ tall, medium build, either totally bald or shaved head, wearing a grey t-shirt and shorts.

Don’t know if the two incidents are related, but I figured I would let everyone know about both.”

What’s Blooming in the Huntington?

Newly planted in the very middle of the east and west beds is a new standard hydrangea….H. “Quick Fire” that will be interesting to keep an eye on. The blooms open white, then change to a rusty pink (current color) and finally to red in the fall. These new hybrids are being developed by Bailey Nurseries in Ohio who are cultivating numerous new hydrangeas….both standards and shrubs. Dill’s Greenhouse will be carrying some of the new ones next spring. While we are growing them in full sun, they can grow in good shade.

In the middle of the middle bed you will see a Black Lace Elderberry (maroon leaves, beautiful pink flowers in the spring.) We are training it as a small tree, but if grown as a shrub can reach 10 feet, but is very amenable to strong pruning in the early spring keeping it small.

The variegated green and yellow grass is “Band of Gold.” Stays reasonably short, but we did lose a few over the winter.

Speaking of “gold,” in case you haven’t yet made a contribution to the Huntington Garden Campaign, we’d appreciate your helping us “grow!” Checks to GVS/Huntington Garden or visit www.germanvillage.com and use “Pay Pal.” If you need additional information, call me…..Bert 443-3563. Make my day!

Knife Sharpening, Take 2

Several people are kicking themselves for forgetting to take their tools to Louise on Saturday the 24th for sharpening and have requested a repeat. Louise has graciously offered to return on Saturday, August 7th to receive knives, garden tools, and scissors from 9 – noon. Let’s see if there are enough to make it worthwhile for her to return: If you wish to have tools sharpened on the 7th, please email Sandy Kight at wkight@columbus.rr.com with your name and phone number. Sandy will call to let you know by the 5th if there’s enough response.

Art Crawl 2010 was a Great Success!

Many thanks to all the vendors, businesses, artists, musicians, and most importantly VOLUNTEERS who made this year’s event such a great success. 100° temperatures didn’t keep the Art Loving, Alley Cats away from Art Crawl 2010. Check out the fun photos of the event at the new GVBC website. www.gvbusinesscommunity.com.
Central Ohio Blood Donors Needed

Blood donations are down 10% this month. Local hospitals are having difficulty meeting the needs of patients. This information is from the Red Cross Diversity Leadership Council meeting I attended
Tuesday, July 20. As the officer on Highway Patrol said “leave your blood at the Red Cross, not on the highway”. Please call 1-800-GIVE BLOOD to schedule your blood donation appointment at a location near
you! And thank you so very much for your Gift of Life.

Food Pantry Needs Canned Goods
On the first day of the Food Pantry this week we served a record number of needy families – 58! We still have 2 more serving days and the shelves are nearly bare of canned vegetables and fruit. A huge way the GV community could help is to donate canned fruit and veggies or cash to the Pantry this week. Your generous gift can be dropped off at the Meeting Haus or brought to the church (200 E. Livingston Ave.) Thank you for your generosity!

Sincerely, Pastor Jim Donnan

High 5 Columbus Info at CMC

High 5 Columbus: Hip on High – Cool by Association

Many marketing efforts to promote the amenities along the main corridor of Columbus have come and gone. The latest launched in February has more product with which to work than perhaps previous attempts have had. “High 5 Columbus” promotes the five districts that stretch five miles and connect a wide array of experiences along Columbus’ historic High Street.

There is more to promote because in the past couple decades, High Street’s neighborhood groups, its occupants and the city have invested time, money and endless imagination into creating a sensational spine for Columbus that has garnered national attention. The return of the historic High Street arches, the explosive eruption of the Arena District and the rebirth of the Short North are giving gusto to a the campaign.

The historic architecture begins in German Village (and the Brewery District) and continues seamlessly through the other areas included in the High 5 – Downtown, the Arena District, the Short North and the University District. Each area overflows with unique culinary adventures, entertainment for every taste, professional sports, world-class arts and boutique shopping galore.

Cleve Ricksecker, his signature bow tie nearly as well-known as another Columbus bow-tie maven, will share the marketing plan of the High 5 Columbus initiative – its goals, its challenges, its expectations and its unique packaging of some of Columbus’ best-loved and best kept secrets.

How will this all work and how will it benefit Columbus? To attend this Columbus Metropolitan Club forum, go to the website: www.columbusmetroclub.org.

Five Dollars a Week

As a 501C-3, non-profit organization dedicated to historic preservation with an unfaltering commitment to educate residents, visitors, city and state officials to value, protect, and enhance our community, we rely on members and others of good will for significant financial support.

In fact, almost one-third of the 2010 German Village Society budget is expected to come from membership dollars.

Everyone wholeheartedly supports the array of activities the GVS does “For the Good of the Neighborhood”. No questions, no doubts.

There is strong consensus, though, that more of those who benefit should financially support the countless daily tasks and efforts that serve our community and that have helped shape German Village for 50 years and, we hope, will do so for the next 50 as well.

Think $5.00 per week. For less than $5.00 each week you can be a Patron level member ($250/year) of the German Village Society.

We hope you will think about this when it is time to renew your membership or time for you to join the organization that supports, educates and advocates on behalf of our historic neighborhood and our beloved community.

We hope you will consider this $5.00 investment each week when you are so glad the GVS is here for you and your friends and neighbors, for school children, for local and international visitors, for people who grew up here, and for those who live here and those who love what German Village represents.

When you attend an event at the Meting Haus, when you call with a question or to report a lost or found pet, or stop in to chat or have a cup of coffee, when you see the beautiful parks so lovingly cared for, when you are represented in discussions about brick street repair or the future of the 70/71 split, think: $5.00/week.

In addition to the many activities and accomplishments that the German Village Society proudly does “For the Good of the Neighborhood”, there are noteworthy direct member benefits as well.

For example: 20 percent discount on all events, products and services (such as copies of historic files, and Meeting Haus space rentals), as well as assistance with package delivery and other special needs.

For members at the $125 level and above, two complimentary tickets to June’s Haus & Garten Tour are included as well.

Starting in 2010 there will be a distinction between members and non-members in the services and products the GVS offers.

In other words, you will need to be a GVS member (at the level you feel you can afford to help maintain our services) to receive certain benefits or services. A list of member benefits, as well as opportunities to get connected in German Village can be found at www.germanvillage.com.

If you haven’t renewed your membership already you will receive an email with details. Non-members within the German Village boundaries will receive a letter with an invitation to join and membership information.

If you have renewed already, thank you, thank you.

Help Us Welcome New Neighbors

When you have a new neighbor, give Bob Jackson our volunteer Membership Coordinator a call. We would like to welcome all folks new to German Village and tell them a bit about both the German Village Society and the German Village Commission.

Updating the Society’s membership database and the N4N database is one of the tasks that keeps Bob the busiest, day in and day out. Just think how often some people change their phone numbers or email addresses!

We have a process for identifying all new German Village property owners via real estate sales but for all others who move into our neighborhood, we rely completely on our members and friends to be able to welcome them. We need your help!

If you have rental property and would like to distribute this official welcome to German Village from the Society and the Commission, just let Bob know and we are happy to provide these letters to you for delivery to your tenants.

The amazing sense of community that German Village enjoys and which is such a source of pride for so many of us begins when we welcome someone new into our community. Help us do that by letting us know when you meet someone new in your micro-neighborhood! Call or email Bob at volunteer@germanvillage.com.

A security reminder from a Fifth Street neighbor…

Monday night by accident my car was left unlocked, it was parked near the corner of 5th and Beck. This morning I noticed that someone had gone through my stuff and took several items. Nothing was damaged, so I believe this was a crime of opportunity. I’ve filed a police report. I would highly suggest that everyone take extra care to make sure their vehicles are locked, and to be sure they do not leave anything of value in the car. Also be on the look out for someone walking down the street checking car doors – hopefully we can prevent it from happening again.
Recycling FYI from St. Mary

Please be advised that the recycle containers behind St. Mary, both aluminum cans and paper waste, will not be available beginning Aug. 5, 2010 due to the set up required for the Homecoming festival scheduled for Aug. 13-14. Both containers will be returned by Aug. 19th.
Police Lunch Next Thursday

This month’s Police Lunch will be Thursday, July 29th at 12:30 in the Scheurer Room of the German Village Meeting Haus. Some recent car thefts and a pedestrian hold-up will be discussed along with some community safety tips. This is a great opportunity for German Village residents to get important information and also a chance to thank our 11th Precinct Police Officers for their dedication and hard work. Please feel free to attend.

We’re so excited about this Wistfully Wicked tasting! Wendy has chosen several of our favorite farm made cheeses, matched them with accompanying regional charcuterie and topped it all off with glasses of neighboring wines.

From the United States we will feature pairings from Appalachia which show off some wonderful roots foods that are finally getting their due. We will also highlight combinations from France, Spain and Italy – all classics that are sure to become part of your repertoire.
Support Schumacher Place 2010 Home and Garten Tour
The SPCA house tour is this Saturday. Do not let the rain turn you away because the houses and gardens are amazing! If you have yet to purchase your tickets, they will be on sale starting at 5:30 ish at 898 Bruck St. on Saturday. There are still tickets available at Village Coney as well for tour only or nonmember tour and party.

The tour and party will be held at 898 Bruck St. in the backyard. In case of rain, it will be held inside. Come hungry to the party because Village Coney is supplying a hot dog bar and Joanna, Kelli, Patty and Joanna’s mom will be making great side dishes. Sodas, beer and wine will also be provided. Tour and party tickets for members are only 15.00!

Please dress accordingly for rain which means wear shoes you can remove easily so we don’t track rain into the homes. Also, don’t forget to bring money for raffle tickets. We will draw the winning raffle ticket at the party. (You don’t have to be present to win!)

See you Saturday,

Get Your Knives Sharpened this Saturday

REMINDER: Knife sharpening this coming Saturday, July 24, at Kight Studio 551 at 551 South Fifth Street. Louise will receive knives from 9 AM until noon during farm market and begin sharpening at noon until about 5. Earliest deliveries will be completed first, and late deliveries will be ready within a few days thereafter. Bring knives, scissors, garden tools, shop tools, etc. Louise does a fantastic job!

Third Sunday Concert Info

Last Sunday’s performance by DEBE and Bobby Hamlin was terrific and a good number of people enjoyed it at our alternate Rain Location; the Fest Hall in German Village Meeting Haus instead of the normal location of Frank Fetch Park. No Sunday Concert will be canceled by bad weather; it will just move to the Meeting Haus. See you in the Fetch Park on August 15 at 7:00 for the greatly anticipated performance of Christian Howes and his Trio. This concert is not to be missed.
Actors’ Theatre Tent Dinner Invitation

Josie Merkle shares this info about Actors’ Theatre’s premiere performance of Dark of the Moon.

I have the great pleasure of being a part of the cast, playing the Conjour Woman! I would love it if all my German Village friends can join me opening night, or if that isn’t possible, sometime during the run of the show.

What’s Blooming in the Huntington

The white lilies are at their peak and so very fragrant. They are Casa Blanca’s and this year were planted in honor of John Gramelt. They have a somewhat limited lifetime and need to replaced every 3 or 4 years as the blooms get smaller and less prolific. (They bloom so hard they run out of energy.) A number of you have asked where to buy them. You can order the bulbs from B & D Lilies by telephone at 360.765.4341 or by email at www.bdlilies.com. They have a great catalogue which you would probably enjoy.

The earlier red lily you also liked so well is “Red Alert” which you can also order for B & D Lilies. This one has not run out of energy yet!

I suggest you plant 3 bulbs to a whole to give you a great “splash” of color.

We have labeled the plants in the space along the promenade (thanks to a donation from Key Blue Print) to make i.d. easier for you. Some have only been available at specific nurseries…..feel free to call and ask if you need further information. (Bert…443-3563)

The deadheaders are always in the garden (unless it’s raining) on Tuesdays 5:00 – 6:45 or so and Saturdays from 8:00 -10:30 if you want to stop and ask about any of the plants. Check out the Kangaroo Paws for something new and fun!

If you have sun…..(5-6 hours)….you should be able to grow anything we grow.
Columbus Kitty Adoption Center

Remember the cats in the storefront on Whittier across from the Hey Hey?

Columbus Kitty Adoption Center (CKAC) has moved the cats into private foster homes in German and Merion Village where they are much happier. However, because of our lack of exposure now, donations have really dropped off. We are a no-kill adoption center run by volunteers and really rely on these donations of scoopable litter, canned and dry cat food and money to cover medical fees.

We still have open house on Saturday from 12 – 3 but since the location rotates, please call each week for the location. We currently have several litters of darling kittens so please call and try to attend. Donations can also be dropped off at my house at 299 East Sycamore. (614-449-8525) or at the open house.

We now have non-profit status for donations, and our web site is:
www.columbuskittyadoptioncenter.org

Fireplace Marble for Sale

I would love for my Italian marble fireplace surround to go to a good German Village home. You can reach me at jdemarti@columbus.rr.com or by phone at: 444-3656. I live on Lazelle Street. The marble was installed in 1980 when my house was renovated.

The measurements of the marble multiplied by about $45 / square foot, which is what Mont Granite said I should ask for used marble, totals about $420. I am certainly open to a reasonable offer!

Remembering German Village

Editor’s Note:

Many people have asked where they can purchase a copy of my book Remembering German Village ~ Columbus, Ohio’s Historic Treasure so I take this opportunity to share that copies are on sale at the Meeting Haus Visitor Center and the Book Loft. The collection of ThisWeek German Village columns shares a wealth of neighborhood history and pride and truly was a labor of love ~ many thanks to those who have already purchased copies!

germanvillage.com updates
Just this past weekend, the www.germanvillage.com website folks were hard at work upgrading the online membership sign up/renewal form. The new components will enhance the capabilities of the German Village Society to engage the community as they ease through the sign-up steps. No one has to login any more to update their personal info – all of it is collected up front when they join. Hopefully, new members will agree that it is a streamlined process to join the Society!

A major addition is that members may now have more than one username and password per household – i.e. up to two different usernames/passwords can be created for each membership in the Society!!

You may also note that member’s personal bio info will no longer be within their GVS member page – that info will be coming soon by way of a social forum. This is an exciting new addition we are looking forward to….wouldn’t it be neat if members were able to communicate via the website? How about starting a GVS rent/borrow/buy forum, i.e. a mini-craigslist? The possibilities are endless and we are eager to tackle this new phase in the coming months.

Thoughts, ideas, let us hear ‘em – CLICK HERE

Tough Loss for GV in the Cupcakes vs. Muffins Game
Unfortunately the mighty Cupcakes did not prevail, but they put on a great showing against a team that plays 40 games together each year….and they’d never played once. The final score was 21 to 17 – favoring the Muffins.

The quote of the day was from Amanda Ellis, owner of Bakery Gingham and title sponsor of the Bakery Gingham Cupcakes, telling the guys “Remember, a Muffin is nothing more than a naked cupcake!”

A great time was had by the teams and the fans….such a great time that the Muffins coordinator, Jim Kimnach, has already been in touch to schedule a rematch next year!

Special thanks to Amanda Ellis, Bakery Gingham owner and title sponsor of the event and Kelly Clark, Bakery Gingham Cupcakes captain who fielded the team.
Member/Neighbor Spotlight ~ Mike Cornelis
We may know Mohawk Street resident Mike Cornelis best for his stellar volunteer track record and vintage base ball abilities (see team huddle photo in Cupcakes vs. Muffins article) but he’s got lots of other things keeping him busy too…

BEMA Elects Michael Cornelis (Sasa – Demarle) Chairman of the Board of Directors

OVERLAND PARK, KS – BEMA elected new members to its executive committee and board of directors at its annual meeting held on June 19, 2010.

Michael J. Cornelis, Vice President of Sasa-Demarle, was elected chairman of the board of directors. Cornelis, an active member of BEMA since 1985 has served the organization as a member of the board of directors for six years. During that time he served as the chairman of the Marketing and Trade Relations committees. In the past 4 years he has served as a member of the Executive Committee.

Mr. Cornelis has represented BEMA on the IBIE committee, contributing to improving IBIE’s marketing efforts in the current show cycle. He was instrumental in orchestrating IBIE’s partnership with the Louis Lesaffre Cup competition and the Retail Bakers Association. Cornelis served as BEMA’s representative on the task force that opposed low-carb fad diets in the early part of this decade. This task force then led to the creation of the Grain Foods Foundation. Cornelis was a founding trustee of the Grain Foods Foundation, serving as their secretary in 2004 and 2005. He later served as BEMA’s representative on the Grain Foods Foundation’s marketing committee.

In 2001 Cornelis served on BEMA’s long-term planning committee and helped to shape a new approach to the way BEMA worked. This committee changed BEMA’s structure to a self-managed association with its own staff. It also initiated a plan to dedicate its meetings to helping members build their businesses, develop better relationships with customers, and foster executive development. “It’s been exciting to help create such a strong, pertinent plan and to see it working so well,” says Cornelis. “As BEMA’s chairman, I pledge to stay on plan and keep working to build a better BEMA.”

BEMA, the association for bakery equipment manufacturers and allieds, was founded in 1918 as an international, not-for-profit trade association representing leading bakery and food suppliers. BEMA focuses specifically on furthering the professional, technological, educational, safety and sanitation practices within the bakery and food manufacturing industries.

Website Update!

Thoughts, ideas, let us hear ‘em – comment below
