Trash and recycling haulers can make a bit of noise in the course of service pickups. Here’s what our Columbus Police Liaison Officer Robin Medley said: The City Attorney’s Office states that trash and recycling are considered a necessary service, therefore noise ordinances do not necessarily apply to them. Secondly, waste management companies are not willing to reschedule an entire route. They come into our neighborhood at that hour in part because the traffic is less, and they do not obstruct traffic as much at that early hour. Given our narrow streets and alleys, this makes sense.

Officer Medley stated that this is not a criminal issue so he is limited as to his actions. He did say that if someone wanted to pursue this, it more than likely should be taken up with the zoning department. Claims may be started at 311.columbus.gov.

Officer Medley reiterated that this is a consumer complaint issue between a service provider and the consumer.
