The Weekly Digest

We start this week’s edition with sad news…
Last week, Beck Street neighbor Denny Valot lost his sister, Elizabeth Valot Timberlake, 53 of Canton, Ohio. Please keep Denny and his family in your thoughts.

Earlier this week, Ray Peterson, died at his home in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Mary Drudi wrote the following of him:

“For those of you who may not be familiar with him, Raymond Peterson was the ‘quieter’ half of Tony and Ray.  Generosity was second nature to them both, especially when it came to German Village and its residents.  Always the society butterfly, he would go to the ‘opening of a letter’ as he frequently was quoted as saying.  If you were every lucky enough to attend one of the famous parties, you knew an invitation to 291 East Beck Street meant you had arrived.  He worked as an interior decorator and did wonderful work as evidenced by several homes in the Village as well as in my old home. There are a million Raymond stories all of which would make you laugh if it weren’t such a sad occasion, but they are better not shared here.  Just ask anyone who was around him and watch them smile as they remember.”

Ray leaves behind his life partner of 41 years, Tony Ratay.  Condolences may be sent to:

St. Mary School Open House Thursday, 2.3.11
We down the street at Saint Mary School would like German Village to know that our annual Open House is coming up on Thursday, February 3.  Student-led tours of our Preschool through 8th grade school will be conducted from 10:00 am- 2:00 pm, and then again in the evening, from 4:30-7:30. Our German Village neighbors are welcome to stop by for a look at this neighborhood school, and get a glimpse at why we believe St. Mary School is so special.  Registration information for the 2011-2012 school year will be available.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact me.

Interested in your Third Street House History?
Attention Residents of South Third Street in German Village:

This is your chance to have your home’s residential history placed for free on our proposed new Website:  www.germanvillagethirdstreet.  This effort is part of a larger ongoing project which we hope will eventually include all streets in German Village. Next week, residents of Third Street in German Village not already on this Website will be receiving a letter from us.

In it we will explain how you can have your home’s history included for free by simply signing the accompaning Website appearance agreement and mailing it to us in the stamped envelope also included in the packet.  These histories will feature a picture of your home surrounded by the names and occupations of residents beginning from the first mention of your home in our data base (as early as the Civil War) until about World War II.  While this service is free, we hope you will also consider the purchase of a house history and thus help support our project financially.  With a $35.00 purchase,  you will receive a copy of this history in the form of a parchment document.  In addition, this historic presentation will now include residents from World War II till the present, additional biographical notes on the residents, and if so desired, the names of you and your family prominantly featured.  The Website presentation of the house history will be similarly enhanced.  If you would like to consider such a purchase, simply include your phone number or e-mail address on the returned Website appearance agreement.  We will prepare an enhanced history for your inspection with no obligation.

While this particular project involves just South Third Street, we encourage all residents and home owners in the Village who are interested in having a house history completed to contact us.  Remember, a portion of each purchase is donated to the Central Ohio Food Bank.  See our Website, www.germanvillagehousehistories.com for earlier presentations and more information on our project.

 Thank you,

Lost & Found
FOUND Sunday Jan. 23 at the corner of Third & Whittier (near T. David Collection):  Walker traction stretchable cleats (protection from ice) fit over shoes. Please call the Meeting Haus to claim.
I lost a remote control for my dogs’ collars in the snow somewhere between Fetch Park and Kossuth Street on either 5th or Mohawk Street last night (1/20). If anyone finds it, please contact Heidi Harendza at HEHarendza@aol.com. It has six buttons labeled V1, V2, L1, L2, H1, H2.
One neighbor also reports that his snow shovel was stolen from his front porch, so be mindful to put yours away no matter how tempting it is to leave out.

Be Mindful of Neighbors When Walking Dogs
While this is a touchy subject, it seems worth mentioning due to neighbors’ concerns. A quick phone call to CPD verified that “all dogs must be on a leash or under direct control” at all times. “Under direct control” means that when called, a dog would immediately be by its owners’ side. Having to call a dog multiple times would not indicate that the dog is under direct control.
One neighbor reported the following:
“I walk my dog with a leash all the time, but lately have been having problems with dogs off their leash. Just in the past week, my dog has been attacked twice while walking her on her leash, myself once, and just today, my dog and I were harassed by a mid size dog in the park.”
